TL DR, yes it is possible to see your life flash before your eyes, but we have no way of knowing that this happens to EVERYONE when they die, and we also know that some people THINK they remember their life flashing before their eyes, but they actually didn't. So while you might swerve and think "Holy fuck! That was close" and get all hyped up and anxious, it's only later than you'll remember "seeing your life flash before your eyes". Later on, when remembering that experience, your brain can concoct false memories that really feel true, but that you didn't actually experience when it happened. But it can still feel extremely emotional to narrowly avoid falling off a cliff or swerving to avoid an oncoming car. Near-death experiences only happen when you're actually severely injured, usually when you have a heart attack or suffer serious blood loss. Getting really lucky and avoiding death is not the same as a near-death experience. However, a lot of people reporting to "see their life flash before their eyes" when they narrowly miss a car accident are probably having false memories. One of these chemicals, DMT, has been re-created in labs and is now a popular, but illegal, psychedelic drug that can cause many of the same experiences people report when they have a near-death experience. Every character (good and bad) seems to have a flashback sequence or a life flashing experience as part of their. Doctors aren't sure what exactly is happening to cause these phenomena, some say it's simply the lack of oxygen to your brain causing hallucinations and strange sensations, other say it's caused by certain chemicals your brain releases when its fighting as hard as it can to keep the body alive. Gungrave uses this trope as much as possible. They also often feel an unexplained feeling of happiness or inner peace, they feel like they're okay with dying. A lot of people have what's called "near-death experiences" where, when their body is close to death, they experience lots of bizarre mental visions, usually involving important life experiences, bright lights or religious stuff.
